Fire fighters were called to the scene of a fire in Stockport town centre in the early hours.
More than 50 firefighters were called to a large blaze at a five-storey building in Stockport town centre. The fire broke out at the building, which is a block of flats under construction, on Lower Hillgate at about 02:20 BST.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said houses surrounding the site were evacuated as a precaution. The operation had been significantly reduced by 09:30 BST and residents were being allowed back in their homes. A large part of the town centre remains cordoned off and Lower Hillgate is closed in both directions between Market Place and the junction of Waterloo Road and Edward Street.
